Commercial Photography and Your Business, the Reason Why You Should Call in The Pro!

I have to declare, I'm a bit of a Do it yourself enthusiast myself. I've inherited a wondrously unrefined arrogance from my dad that tells me that "If the guy over there can do it, then so can I and undoubtedly twice as well"! I've discovered that as a whole this opinion has served me well as a fundamental life philosophy. In deed much of my self tutored knowledge over the years has proved effective in both saving me time and money.

When modernizing a semi dilapidated house a few years ago I decided to utilize this "give it a go" viewpoint and swiftly learned how to do basic wiring, plumbing, decorating and even building. There's no doubt that I saved a small fortune by doing some of these basics myself but when it came down to certain more adept jobs, I called in a tradesman. The reasons why are obvious. Firstly it would take me years of training and work experience just to learn their meticulous craft, then I would have to splurge hundreds if not thousands of pounds in specialist tools and equipment, next it would take me days to do a job that'd take a expert tradesman just a few hours to complete and in conclusion and most significant of all was quality of the finished job, not only do I not want my house falling down as a result of a fumbled knock through but also it's got to look good in order to eventually sell the house on and make a profit!

Well I'm no tradesman, I can't confess to be an expert plumber, plasterer or electrician but I have been a working photographer now for around 14 years and feel that the very same principles apply in deciding whether or not to employ a photographer.

Photographers are so high-priced to hire so why should you bother breaking the bank when you could just setup your product on a steady table, aquire a couple of desk lamps and get shooting with your new 600 megapixel compact camera? Surely the money saved could go towards purchasing that new web site you've been promising yourself? Well as you may probably figure I disagree, I wouldn't make a great photographer if I can't even warrant my own existence!

If you're simply flogging a few old belongings on ebay then sure give it a go yourself. No one browsing ebay is going to give a monkeys whether or not your old fridge freezer is flawlessly lit, beautifully composed, in focus or bathed in a dirty orange caste or not, right? Well quite possibly not but let's suppose the next fridge freezer listed comes with a whole array of gorgeous photographs and worse is less expensive than yours to buy. Which one are they going to select? I'm not recommending that you start hiring a commercial photographer just to flog your old junk on ebay but hopefully this shows a theory which is in essence the same in all kinds of business; if a immediate competitors brochure is artfully designed with chic photography but your brochure was thrown together by a friend with a copy of Photoshop with photographs shot badly on his pocket digicam... you can suspect the rest. Don't be misled into believing this is all about your short term sales, it's actually just a small part of a much larger picture, your brand. Would you choose to be perceived by your prospective or future customers as amateurish, slap dash and cheap or professional, slick and unique?

Sure there are all the usual reasons why you should employ a professional photographer, yeah we've undertaken years of training or work experience, yup our kit bags are loaded with painfully expensive equipment, oh and lets not disregard our incredible eye for a funky composition etc etc however the real reason I think you should at least consider calling in a professional is that in todays crowded market place it's become even more critical than ever to stand out from the crowd, celebrate you uniqueness and exude brand quality.
